Fire Cider Recipe
Here's a simple and effective recipe for making 1/2 gallon of Fire Cider (two 1-quart jars). This recipe combines a variety of traditional ingredients known for their health benefits.
Fire Cider Recipe (1/2 Gallon)
Ingredients
2 quarts (same as 1/2 gallon) apple cider vinegar (raw, unfiltered with the "mother")
1 cup chopped fresh horseradish root
1 cup chopped onion (yellow or red)
1 cup chopped garlic (about 10-12 cloves)
½ cup fresh ginger root (peeled and chopped)
½ cup cayenne pepper (fresh or dried, adjust to taste)
1-2 lemons or oranges (zested and sliced)
1-2 tablespoons honey (to taste, optional)
Additional herbs or spices (e.g., black peppercorns, turmeric, or cinnamon) — optional
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the horseradish root, onion, garlic, and ginger into small pieces. If using fresh cayenne peppers, remove the stems and chop them.
Combine Ingredients: In a large (1-gallon size) glass jar or a food-safe plastic container, add all the chopped ingredients, lemon or orange slices, and any additional herbs or spices you wish to include.
Add Vinegar: Pour the apple cider vinegar over the mixture until all ingredients are fully submerged. Leave some headspace at the top of the jar.
Seal the Jar: Seal the jar tightly with a lid. If you're using metal, place a piece of parchment paper between the vinegar and the lid to prevent corrosion.
Infusion Period: Place the jar in a cool, dark place for about 4 to 6 weeks. Shake the jar gently every few days to help combine the ingredients and infuse the vinegar.
Strain the Mixture: After the infusion period, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar or bottle, discarding the solids.
Sweeten (Optional): If desired, stir in honey to taste, while the mixture is still at a room temperature (not hot, to preserve the honey’s benefits).
Store: Store the finished Fire Cider in a cool, dark place, or refrigerate. It can last for several months.
Usage
Take 1-2 tablespoons of Fire Cider daily, either straight or diluted in water or tea. You can also use it in salad dressings, marinades, or as a flavorful addition to soups and sauces.
Enjoy your homemade Fire Cider and its delightful flavors! Feel free to adjust the ingredients to suit your taste preferences.
